Explanation of vaccination
Chickenpox (Varicella)
みずぼうそう(水痘)
Illness to prevent
Chickenpox
Chickenpox begins with the gradual appearance of a rash of small red liquid-containing
blisters. After about one week, all the blisters form black scabs.
Until the scabs form, the rash of blisters is very itchy. Babies will be
in a bad mood as they will have trouble sleeping.
Children with a larger area of rash generally tend to have a higher fever
for a longer period.
Usually chickenpox proceeds naturally without serious complications. Some
cases, however, may develop severe symptoms requiring hospitalization and leaving
visible scars.
Type of vaccine
Live virus vaccine
Age and frequency of the vaccination
over 1 yr old, 1 shot.
Side effects
Almost has no side effect. Fever and rash may occur rarely.
Minimum interval between vaccinations
over 27days
Note
Mild chickenpox does occur in some vaccinated children that are exposed to chickenpox.
But the symptoms may be mild, no fever, a few blisters, and will disappear in a
few days.
Because this illness can cause high fever, it is recommended that children who
are prone to febrile convulsions should get vaccinated.
