When a body
is infected by bacteria or viruses, infection fighting proteins, known as
antibody, are produced to fight the invasion. Gamma globulin products are
made from these antibodies. Depending on the types of antibodies used, there
are different types of Gamma Globulin pills.
Applications of Gamma Globulins
Used in the treatment of diseases, such as agammaglobulinemia
or hypogammaglobulinemia, measles, hepatitis A, polio, severe infections,
thrombocytopenic purpura, Kawazaki disease, and in the prevention of hepatitis
B and tetanus etc.
About Gamma Globulin
Because gamma globulins are made from human blood, it is
blood products. Even though gamma globulin products are carefully inspected
and maintained, there is always a chance that unknown microorganism may have
entered the products.
Attenuated vaccines will be less effective after receiving Gamma Globulin
products.
Therefore, attenuated vaccines can not be received for 3 months after receiving
Gamma Globulin products.
However, you can receive the vaccines of BCG, polio, and the inactivated
vaccines (DPT, DT, Japanese encephalitis etc) at anytime.
Also, when receiving a large amount of Gamma Globulin for thrombocytopenic
purpura and Kawasaki disease etc., 6 months wait is needed.
Measles can be prevented if the infected person receives Gamma Globulin within
the first 6 days of contacting a measles patient or becomes vaccinated with
measles vaccine within 3 days of contact.
However, it is usually unclear whether to receive the Gamma Globulin or measles
vaccine when living in a group because the exact time of an infection is
unknown.
Please consult your doctor before making a choice.
