Antibiotics can be classed as bactericidal
or bacteriostatic. Bactericidal antibiotics directly kill the susceptible
bacteria, bacteriostatic reversibly inhibit the growth of bacteria, that
can reproduce when antibiotics in the blood were gone. Antibiotics are
also classed by the mechanism of action and chemical structure.
Mechanism of Action |
Classes of Antibiotic |
1.Inhibition of cell wall synthesis |
・β-Lactams ・Glycopeptides ・Fosfomycin etc |
2.Inhibition of protein synthesis |
・Tetracyclines ・Aminoglycosides ・Macrolides ・Chloramphenicol・linezolid |
3.Inhibition of nucleic acid synthesis |
・Quinolones・Sulphonamides ・Rifampicin |
