Nearly One-Third Of U.S. Teens Involved in Violence: Study | 2010.09.24 |
Nearly one-third (7.8 million) of American adolescents took part in violent behavior within the previous year, according to a U.S.government study released Wednesday. The analysis of data collected from 112,885 adolescents, ages 12 to 17, who were interviewed between 2004 and 2008 found that 22.6 percent reported being in a serious fight at school or work, 16.1 percent were involved in group-against-group fighting, and 7.5 percent said they had attacked others with intent to seriously harm them. Violent behavior was more likely among males (34.6 percent) than among females (27 percent), said the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. |
